A bit nervous about raising rates? Here’s some food for thought

We always like to keep our eyes open for items that might be of interest to our readers. This one was particularly noteworthy. It comes from the president’s letter to the members of the Associated Swimming Pool Industries of Florida.

The comments are from Shelby Warren. And as we read them, we were reminded that one of the most difficult if not the most difficult issues facing service professionals is whether to raise their rates and by how much. We found Shelby's remarks most refreshing:

After the discussion at the last meeting about raising maintenance rates, I decided to do it this month 63.5 cents a week. Then the unbelievable happened!

One of our very old customers called in reference to our raising her bill from $85 per month to $87.50. She said that she didn’t think that I was charging enough, that it was worth at least $95 per month! She then said that she was sending me a check for the larger amount and that I should change my computer accordingly. This amazing lady has been a valued customer for many years and we hope to serve her for many more years.

By the way, we did not lose a single customer due to the price increase. Not even a comment...

Thanks for sharing, Shelby!
